Those Wacky British Scientists

We have reported in the past about British scientists and the peculiar methodolgy used in solving the problems facing us in the 21st Century, such as ear wax.

So, what are they busy researching now?

That's right, tentacle dominance among the octupus.

Using Legos, and Rubik's Cubes, our intrepid British scientists, let's call then Nigel and Graham, have managed to get a grant to study this all important topic.

According to the Daily Mail Online, various toys are dropped into the water, and the octopuses (octopi?) are monitored to see which tentacle they use first to grab the toy to see if there is a dominant or favourite one.

This can only make one wonder exactly what is the long term plan?

Are we looking to create a new breed of super intelligent calamari?

Really smart sushi?

Or a baby sitter for Octomom?

I'm not sure about you, but I'd be pretty angry if my dinner could solve Rubik's Cube before I do.

  2. Hmmm seems like the octopus is getting there I mean solving that cube. It is really important though to know which tentacle is dominant?Maybe so one can avoid that tentacle first when you are face to face? I really wouldn't know. heheheh

  3. Do you have an address for the person doling out the cash for this perhaps?
I've got an idea for an important piece of research.....

  4. Yikes. I thought it was going eat the cube.

Yeah. I'm sure all octupi are lefties anyway so why bother with the research.

    ;-)

  5. I'm pretty sure the octopus could solve the Rubik's Cube before I do anyway.

I definitely have a dominant testicle. It's the lef...wait, what was the question?

If they really want to develop intelligent sea creatures into something useful, why not train them to recommend an affordable wine that would go well with the meal when I eat them? Maybe a squid could point out the best bottle just before I begin the process of turning it into calamari. Because I've never cooked calamari, if would also be helpful if it could provide some butchering and cooking instructions before it meets my knife.

  10. Wonder how one would work for washing dishes? My dishwasher is broken and six extra arms would be great right now.

The octopus could be blind and still solve the Rubik's Cube before I could.

  14. Um.

My post today is also about an octopus.

I have calculated the odds on this and they are astronomical.

As such, I'm considering calling Scarlett Johansson to see if she wants to hook up.

    Doesn't hurt to try.

    Again.

  15. I'm eating the dinner and I don't care if it can solve the Rubik's Cube before I could. Bwahahahahaha.

Have a terrific day Crotchety. :)

  16. Intelligent sea creatures really turn me on. Just kidding, I'm just hungry.

  17. They should instead look into tentacle dominance among Japanese cartoons.

  18. @ Dani: An octopus would be pretty helpful for that.

    @ Insanely: That's a thought

@ Adullamite: I'm sure you can think of many important studies to be conducted

@ Reforming: But which tentacles are the favorite left one?

@ Jenn: The last time I tried, the cube wound up smashed into pieces.

@ Douglas: Imagine if you had all those extra arms.

@ Michelle: They'll serve it at Randazzo's. Happy Monday to you.

@ Joel: You'd think they would know, too.

@ Shinade: It would leave a bunch of slime behind, but maybe one of the other arms could be used for that

    @ Shawn: Me, too.

@ Moooooog: Let me know how that works out. And if you have Martha Stewart's number.

@ Sandee: Wouldn't it be nice to know how smart your dinner is? You have a great day, also.

@ Sherry: Pretty much. Sure doesn't look appetizing.

@ Beth: Octupus in a nice garlicy marinara sauce would work out well.

@ CB: I'm sure that is the next step.

  19. I like the babysitter idea. I have only been able to solve the Rubiks cube by taking the stickers off and putting them back on where they belong.

I wish these fine researchers would work on something a little more useful like getting men to put the seat back down or teaching kids to clean up their rooms without a mother's nagging.

I'm torn...I'm trying to figure out if they're really stupid for caring or smart for getting the money.

  22. Calimari with a side of rubik's cube sounds tantalizing.

I hope their findings will help us cure cancer..oh wait this study doesn't do something significant like that. Well Dani C does need a baby sitter so hopefully this will help.

  23. If you could find some that have mutated into air-breathers, I'd love to have someone to help me clean out the litter box every day.

They'd have to promise not to kill the cats, of course.

The last thing I want to find is a pile of fur and a half-eaten carcass with a bunch of suction cup marks on it.

  24. @ Jen: That works.

@ Swirl: Just you wait until Wednesday, my friend.

@ Signe: I go with smart for getting the money

@ Self: It's all about helping Dani

@ Janna: Maybe you could feed them a couple strays

  25. It's obvious what this is aid of - the octopus is in training as an underwater assassin. This is actually a piccy of 008 getting his tenticles in shape for releasing the hatches of predatory nucleur submarines.

When it comes to subterfuge us Brits are always original. And we don't even wear dark glasses.

  26. And are the left tentacle dominant or right tentacle dominant?

Ask the right questions, get the right answers.

    Sounds good anyway.
