What's the Next Step?

Yeah, I know. I said I wasn't going to blog on Thursdays. Oh well. Stuff happens.
By the way, the contest is almost over, and some of the judges are having major problems. It seems they have laughed their asses off, and that is creating quite the dilemma for them.

But they are tough, that is why they are judges here.

Anyway, today, I have had technological problems. And I am pissed. Usually, I am so darned mellow. (snickers)
Don't tell the Crotchety Old Lady but a few years ago, when my computer had "technological problems," and the front panel fell "mysteriously" off it, well, let's just say computers are sissies. They can't take a punch.

Photobucket

No, I didn't use a stick or anything, I gave it a good left jab. The front panel sorta smashed in, and the stoopid computer went flying.

I taught technology a lesson that day. And within a week, or so, that computer was totally trashed, and recycled into something like plastic hangers or another equally perfect use for recycled technology.

Score:

Caveman 1
Technolgy 0

Photobucket
Captain caveman

So, this morning, as always, I went to sign in to my entrecard account. And, it won't let me.

Naturally I did what any calm, rational person would do. I yelled at the computer for a while. That didn't help. Then I went about my business away from the computer.

Photobucket

I came back, and it still didn't work.

I reset my password, sent a note to the dorks at entrecard, and took a nap.

Woke up to no reply from them. So, again, I tried to reset password, and still got the message password is incorrect. What to do, what to do?

I had a peanut butter and tomato sandwich (don't knock it until you try it. It is my contribution to the gastronomic universe. Yer welcome.) I tried again, and still nothing.

Now, this is where I start to get, oh, peeved.

Apparently, I can get my question answered quickly if I ask on the forum for questions. I can get help, too. How do I access the forum?

That's right. I have to sign in. To. The. Account. That. Won't. Let. Me. In.

Photobucket

I hate technology.

You May have Noticed

I haven't posted today. I usually post every day around midnight. I'm trying something new. I call it "The Grand Experiment" because I'm occasionally given to hyperbole.

Really, all it is, I have decided to post on a different schedule. Mondays, Wednesdays, because my "Caption This" has become the talk of the internet, (ed note: The doctor is well aware that Joe is delusional. We find it best to play along) Fridays and Saturdays. I'll be blogging every day on either my Yankees/sports blog, my diabetic blog/my food blog, but I wanted to try to make each a little more interactive.

Don't expect any change in quality. Oh no.

Do you think I'll be any better because I write less?

No, it's going to be as poorly done as ever.

But, by me shutting up a couple days a week, you get a chance to react to my posts. Leave comments without them getting buried under the veritable onslaught of my daily posts.

Speaking of buried, don't for a second think that I have run out of material. Oh, no way, Jose. Or Bob, or {insert your name here} I have not even scratched the surface of the crap in my head. I went to a high school that had its own cemetery. That's something not every 8th grader gets on a tour of the average high school.

I applied for a job, and the job interview ended when I asked, "You're not talking about sailors, are you?" That's an interesting story, I kid you not.

I plan to reveal even more of the phony names I have used in my life. Joey One Testicle is just one of many. I will even reveal Joey One Testicle's real name. Some of you who paid attention may remember One Testicle is just the translation for the phony dirty name I use.

Plenty of hi-jinks and unfunny humor ahead. And that's a promise. I can guarantee it.

Political Correctness Gone Stupid

I know my buddy, The Offended Blogger, usually handles all the offended posts, but she's busy and may miss this latest group of offended folks.

The "N" word. Oh my friggin gawd, don't say it unless you are a certain color, or else someone will feel terrible, and be highly offended.

But, of course, rappers can say it every other word, and it makes them millions. If it makes people feel badly, why should anyone say it? Furthermore, the word is rooted in hatred. Ok, I'm down with not saying it.

For that matter, it seems everyone takes license to poke fun at any group, if they are a member of that group. I mean, is it right to chuckle at one testicled men with pus oozing from their leg even if a member of that elite group? Just sayin'

Never refer to someone as handicapped or crippled, because it will offend them to no end.

Photobucket

Yeah, I'm sure the disabled feel so much better when you descrbe them as a person with a disability rather than refering to them as "those crippled guys." Yeah, makes them want to friggin dance. Oops, sorry about that. You know what I mean.

What's the newest term?

The "R" word.

Oh, yeah. The new movie Tropic Thunder has received protests, both in letter and actual marchers who are urging boycotts because the movie refers to people as retards.

Ok, this is my line in the sand. Photobucket

No, not because I think we should bandy about the word retard, but because of the stupidity of getting offended by this word.

First, where did the word come from? It was a replacement for clinically issued words that were used early in the 20th century.

Get yourself some psychology diagnosis terminology books from the last century and prepare to be surprised. I worked in the mental health field (hard to believe, huh?) and a typical diagnosis would read, and I'm not making this up "Sally is an idiot, but with proper training may one day become a moron."

Obviously, the words changed in meaning as they entered the lexicon of the average American.

So has the word retard. In fact, most mental health agencies use a different terminology when describing their clients. It ranges from cognitively disabled to people with intellectual disabilities to mentally challenged, and numerous names in between.

So, in essence, my question is this: If it's a word they don't use, then why do they protest?

It just looks to me like they are seeking to be offended. And that, to me, is plain retarded.

The Least Boring Awards Post Ever

You know how awards posts are so boring? Yeah, me too. But the reason for them, at least in my mind, is to thank my peers who accepted bribes thought enough of my often
pathetic attempts at whatever the hell it is I'm trying to do here. Plus, I'll introduce some of the members of the oft mentioned staff of Crotchety Old Man World Wide Headquarters and Discount House of Worship.
First, the awards:

Photobucket

Blogging Friends Forever

was awarded to me by lauren of Can You be a part of my Life http://canubapartofmylife.blogspot.com/
Always interesting, and well thought out opinions. A good read.

This award comes with a lot of responsibility. Just the name of the award is suggesting whoever gets it will be my blogging buddy forever. So, if I get drunk, and the Crotchety Old Lady throws me out into the night, shouldn't the recipient be obligated to put me up for a couple days? I would think so. And, if I need to borrow $100 in a few months, my BFF would probably feel an obligation to drop the money in the mail.

But upon further reflection, that would be just too much to ask. So, I would like to, in advance, relieve those presented of any further responsibility. Just take the award in the spirit given, smile for the camera, and go on living la vida loca.

My first choice is my blogging buddy Jenn from of Cabbages and Kings. She has helped me enormously with my blog, and I am in her debt. http://cabbages-n-kings.blogspot.com/

Next is my blogging buddy Claire from A Little Piece of Me http://crpitt.blogspot.com/
She is right there when I have a technical problem. Generally, she laughs at me, but does help me eventually.

Drowsey Monkey http://drowseymonkey.blogspot.com/ also gets an award because she is very helpful when I run into technical problems. As you can tell, I run into a lot of technical problems. She laughs at my problems, but I'm sure it's a language thing. You know how those Canadians are with all those extra "U"s floating around.

Lastly, I'd like to give this award to That Tears It http://thefourthring.blogspot.com/

Lately, he has noted a dearth of things feminine in his life, so I thought I should give him this, the girliest of all awards. Plus, when he stops by, he can take a peak at some of the best blogs written by women. (his co-winners)
I'd hate to see him hanging curtains and putting doilies everywhere. Plus I'm not exactly sure what a doily is. Mrs. Crotchety says she likes them, so I'm sure they have to be bad to have around.

The next award

KickAss blogger

was from Flower Girl at The Garden of the Flower Girl http://www.gardenoftheflowergirl.blogspot.com/

I'm going to award this to Chelle, the Offended Blogger at http://www.offendedblogger.com/
I really need to suck up to her, because she's in charge of the humorbloggers site, and I'm barely qualified. She is taking 50 bloggers, and I'm positive if she drops to 49, I'm so gone.

I'd like to award this to Don from It's a Funny Thing
http://humorium.blogspot.com/

He's running for President, and could use the support.

And the last award is the Arte y Pico
Photobucket

from Bridget the Get Smart Gal at http://www.thegetsmartblog.com/
Her specialities include: Finance, Marketing, Business Buidling, & Telling People What To Do.

I'd like to award this to The Fly at After Dinner Mint. http://thefly4176.blogspot.com/

He is witty and creative.

Now, you rules stickler types may have noticed I have not followed them exactly. I realize this. But I also realize that eventually every blog will be linked to Kevin Bacon or something like that unless we limit things. So, rather than join the Arte Y Pico Must Die movement, I've just decided to limit everything.

You are welcome.

Winners may share with up to 5 others.

Lastly, as promised, I'd like to introduce you to the staff.
There's Rubba, he heads up our photoshopping department
We have the two Donnas. They form the powerful Donna voting bloc when judging the "Caption This" series.
Bchbear is in charge of judging. He likes to play Paula when we judge.
Nicole, who is vice president of operations.
Michiganderlady runs the mail room.
Arti helps in the photoshopping department.
Tammy, head of security, canine division.
And Mrs. Crotchety, catering.

It takes a lot of people to keep a blog going.

Just in case you were wondering

I'm trying to think of something to write about today. So, I decided to look at the weird news listings for inspiration.

I googled Weird News, and what comes up? And I quote "Weird News--Strange Stories from Around the Globe, Bondage File..."

I could not click on that link fast enough.

http://www.sfgate.com/news/bondage

Surprisingly, it was just regular weird stories, and to be honest, they were not that weird. And, it was bondage free.

Photobucket
I hate when that happens, too

While discussing weird things, I like bacon as much as the next guy but

That's even a bit bizarre for me, and it's been suggested that I eat some weird things.

Lastly, I leave you with the Joey One Testicle Update:

Friday Wrap Up

As you may have noticed, I've been pimping www.humorbloggers.com for the last week or so. It's official launch day is today. You'll find links all around my blog for it. Now, keep in mind two things:
first, it will get better and better, and
second, nothing to join right now, just go and enjoy it.

Just make sure you come back, because I'll miss you while you're gone.

Photobucket

You'll also notice that this highly exclusive group of humor bloggers is composed of many of my blog rollists (ers?) That's because I begged them to be my friends and let me list them they like me. They really like me.

Photobucket
I'm pretty sure that was a different speech. Deal with it.

Next, because I give and give, I'd like to mention my favorite site for the blogging community.

www.blogcatalog.com is a great place if you are a blogger, want to be a blogger, know a blogger, wonder why I keep saying blogger, or any other of the million and one questions you may have about blogging. It's a great group of tens of thousands of my dearest friends that I couldn't pick out of a police lineup, and heaven knows half of them will be in one at some time in their lives.

Lastly, I probably won't be around one day next week. I just got an email about a new diet product that claims I can "cleanse" myself and lose 50 lbs in one day. I have to decide which day I plan to spend in the bathroom "cleansing."

Caption This Winner Announced--Blogosphere Rejoices

The staff of Crochety Old Man World Wide Interplanetary Headquarters and Discount House of Worship has chosen the winner of this week's "Caption This Olympic Edition."

Originally, it was going to be the Special Olympic Edition but we are nothing if not politically sensitive.

Anyway, to get right to the voting. As usual, most of the staff is named Donna, and surprisingly, all Donnas voted identically. If McCain or Obama were to find out the importance of the Donna factor in the vote, I'm sure they would change their campaign strategies immediately.
This week, again, the vote wasthisclose, as The Hypocritical One and The Middle Aged Fat Women each garnered an identical number of first place votes. Shyne and Momjeans also picked up first place votes.
So, once again, we had to implement the equivalent of boxing's 10 point must system, known as the "Crotchety Weighted Voting Tabulation Method Or We'll Never Get A Winner Because So Many Excellent Captions Were Submitted," or the CWVTMORNGAWBSMECWS (TM) system.

So, I am pleased to present the nearly famous Zucchini Award for Captioning Excellence to
Photobucket

Drum Roll Please

Middle Aged Fat Woman

With the caption:

In the closest contest imaginable, the Hypocritical One came in second, and Momjeans took third.

Each gets a trophy.

And just one point out of the Zucchini was The Fly.

Shyne, Gumby, Chica, Adullamite, and Lot2Learn also scored multiple points.

Thank you everyone for making this the best Caption This contest to date.

I See you

You do realize that with all the various widgets and tracking stuff on this blog, I can see everything and know everything about you. Oh yeah. Everything you do online is recorded, analyzed, and this information could then be sold to Nigerian thieving scammer bastages goat herders.

Photobucket
Don’t ask, don’t tell

But I don’t do that. No siree. I just study all the information gathered, and use it to make my blog even better for you. Youse all know me. I just give and give.

By now, you are probably wondering why I have called you all here today.

I need help.

Seriously.

I was looking at my spam folder, and I was concerned. Apparently, I've won many, many new computers, along with, at last count, $53,000 from WalMart in gift certificates. Of course, I plan to use my certificates to buy Strawberry PopTarts and a boat. So, should I sell all these computers and PopTarts, or keep them for future use? If I sell them, should I bundle them? How great a package is a computer with a couple boxes of PopTarts? If anyone is looking to open up an internet cafe, I'm your guy, by the way. I can set you right up. I can also help you pick out a toaster as I have vast toasting experience. The coffee, you're on your own.

Photobucket

But here's where I am truly concerned. I use a phony name when filling out online things.

Now, I am starting to get unsolicitated mail to this phony name. Big deal, you say. But I can assure you it is hysterically funny. The name I have used is an off color slang term in another language.

Lots of women, apparently, are interested in meeting up with Joey One Testicle. Who knew?

The Skanky Leg Update and Awards

Mrs. Crotchety got out the camera, and took a beautiful shot of my leg in all its ooey, gooey splendor. I put in a link so it doesn't hit anyone unexpectedly.

http://diabetesdestroys.blogspot.com/2008/08/leg-wound-update.html

It was worse the other day, but unfortunately, she didn't snap the photo.

The blog did win a couple awards this week, and I am very appreciative.

First, from Skye at Ramblings of a Writer http://www.skyewolfwrittenworks.com/

Photobucket

Skye's blog is well-crafted, and a good read.

Next comes from a blog I discovered recently: Ethan from The Natural State Hawg http://naturalhawg.blogspot.com/
The blog is witty, and the man has a gift for naming cats. The blog is loaded with lessons that should be common sense, but seem lacking in too many folks today.

From him I got the
Photobucket

Now, everyone knows these awards come with all kinds of stipulations, and have so many numbers attached to them, I get confused. And everyone also knows I have stopped passing them out fully because I have received a lot lately. No offense intended, as I do a "Reader's Digest" abbreviated version. So, what I do like to do is use this as an opportunity to showcase some blogs that I have been enjoying lately.
I do read every blog on my blogroll nearly every day, so they already have the Crotchety Seal of Approval. That and 5 bucks will get you a nice coffee at Starbucks. But I will guarantee every one is a good read, or I will refund every penny you paid for my advice.

Now, without further ado, here are some of the blogs I've been reading, and, with no obligation on their part, I'd like to present them with whichever award makes them happier. They all deserve both.

Don at Beyond Left Field http://beyondleftfield.blogspot.com/ Great satire.

Lauren at Can You Be a Part of My Life http://canubapartofmylife.blogspot.com/ She's smart, she's funny, she's beautiful. The big debate is whether or not she looks like Jenna Fischer from The Office. 'Nuf said.

Rob at Did I Miss Something? Rob writes 4 different blogs, and they are all good.
http://wwwdidimisssomething.blogspot.com/

Lastly, Lisa, the Work at Home Mom http://workathomemomrevolution.blogspot.com/
What a great site. She researches work at home opportunities so parents can stay at home and raise their children.

And finally, ending this jam-packed Monday edition--

Yesterday's "What is it?" No one guessed. I tried to find it in action, but I couldn't. But here's a similar model being used.

Happy Sunday

I spend a lot of time every day thinking and contemplating. These may seem to be the same thing, but a subtle difference exists.

I spend about 16 hours a day on the computer, and another 16 watching TV, and probably a solid 10 hours thinking of stupid things to write about..

How, you may ask, do I manage to fit all this into just one day?

Through the magic of multi-tasking.

Oh yeah. I’m the king of multi-taskers. Through judicious use of the remote, I’m able to watch Baywatch, “The History of Cereal,” Yankee baseball, and Olympic Women’s Beach Volleyball all at the same time, while chatting with my friends online.

And by the way, Women’s Olympic Beach Volleyball is possibly the greatest multi-tasking sport.

I can be a sports fan, a good American, and a pervert simultaneously.

Photobucket

Amateur Athletics Rule

Now, I did mention contemplation. I do watch the occasional commercial. I want to know for whom these commercials are targeted.

ShamWow. Well, I’ll skip that one because everyone needs one. But I do have a question. During Vince’s spiel, he mentions that “You are going to spend $20 a month for paper towels anyway.”

Ok, I just checked the price on paper towels. The most expensive are around 2 bucks a roll. Which works out to about a roll of paper towels every 3 days.

Honest question: what the hell are you people doing with all those paper towels?

Then I caught a commercial for a gold buying company. The woman in the ad, “Had no idea my gold was worth that much.” Implying she thought it was valueless.

Ok, anyone who had no idea gold was valuable, please raise your hand. Oh, no one?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Then Kathy, our intrepid representative who finds all the cooking gadgets to solve our needs is now pimping some pasta cooker. Because we all know how difficult it is to cook pasta. We need to boil water, put the pasta in and then dump it out. Definitely need some stupid plastic piece of crap to make that easier.

Photobucket

Kathy To the Rescue

If you order now, it comes with 2 knives. A red one for meat and a blue one for vegetables. Easy to remember because of all the blue vegetables, I guess. And the only meat they show being cooked is fish, which comes from the ocean, which is blue, so...never mind.

I’ll just get a cool kitchen gadget like this:

Can you guess what this is?

Miniature therapists and the magical medical wedgie

Warning: Adultish content, mild nudity, pornish thoughts

Classic posts from my diary
January 19 2007
Physical Therapy is more than facing challenges. It is learning to walk, or eat, or any of a myriad of activities of daily living all under the tutelage of a trained, highly skilled physical or occupational therapist (both interchangeably referred to as PT's hereafter.)

From my personal experience, a PT is a young woman who is, shall I say for lack of a better term, petite? How would you describe someone smaller than petite?

My current PT's are attractive Asian women, none taller than 5 foot nothing and who would, after a lumber-jacked sized meal and a soaking rain, barely tip the scales at 98 lbs.

This inherent cuteness is a great benefit to their job. Therapy hurts a lot, yet it is impossible to lash out at someone so adorable. Who could be so mean as to swat a pixie?

But PT's have learned to compensate for their tiny physique. I may tower over them, and weigh more than a squadron of them, but they use a method so insidious, so clever, that one must tip one's cap for their resourcefulness. A team of 2 or more PT's help me to get up and walk. One puts her hand on my shoulder or arm, while the other gives me a wedgie.

That time-tested favorite of grammar school bullies everywhere has now become a medical practice. I'm not exactly sure how pulling my shorts way up into my butt helps me to walk--who am I to argue with medical science--it must be admitted that it works. I put one foot in front of the other and hobble my way to recovery.

January 20, 2007

PT is full of triumphs and disappointments.
Yesterday I spent a few minutes tapping a balloon back and forth with the Occupational Therapist.

It made me wonder exactly what type of job was she preparing me to return to? Did she think I was a combination magician/animal balloon maker at Chucky Cheese?

Perhaps she thought I was a Special Olympics caliber volley ball professional or a circus clown.

Either way, I don't recall ever having a job (and I've had plenty of bad ones) where a balloon was used regularly.
Could she be subconciously suggesting to me that I seek a new career?

I put get a "how to make animal balloons" book on my list of things to do as soon as I get out of here. I should probably get a "how to juggle" book, too. I'll need something to do after I've made everyone a balloon poodle.

I mentioned disappointments, and I've had quite a few.

When my overly perky miniature PT suggested that she would get one of her cohorts and we would get in the shower, well, every post puberty fantasy raced through my head.

Photobucket

Of course, this mind movie was scored like a 70's porn flick.

Bwaaah, bwaah bwaaaah. Ooom pukka puuukkka.

Turns out all they wanted to do was watch me get out of my wheelchair, pivot, and then slide onto the shower bench, and then reverse the procedure.

But hope springs eternal. When she suggested that we get into bed, again, that same 70's soundtrack kicked in.

Bwaaah bwaaah bwaaaah. Ooom Pukka Puuukkkka.

We went into a seperate room with a standard issue hospital bed. She drew the curtains. I got into bed just as she asked. I rolled over when she said to.

Yeah!!

I wondered which of my buddies I was going to call first to tell them the old man still had it!!!

Then, in a sultry voice, she huskily whispered, "OK, now give it to me hard, big guy."

Wait, that was from my mental movie. What she actually said was, "Ok, now get your big butt out of bed if it isn't too hard."

**Sigh**

My Doctor Visit

My leg is red, swollen, bleeding, scabby and oozing pus. Mrs. Crotchety’s first thought was that I needed to go to the doctor.

Mine, of course, was, “Where’s the camera? This sounds like a really good blog post.”

Most of my really good blog posts involve doctors, hospital staff, and things inserted into my body medical procedures.

By the way, my doctor is Dr. Sergi. I told him tonight I was going to give him a shout out. He is a great doctor, really. Dedicated and up to date on everything. And he always asks me questions about my blog.

And hopefully, when someone Googles him, they’ll get this blog. Win-win.

By the way, this wouldn’t have been the first time posting disgusting parts of my body.
http://diabetesdestroys.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-diabetic-foot-nasty-photo.html
Warning: Very disgusting photo. I‘m serious.

Anyway, in her haste to get me to my doctor, we missed the opportunity.

Photobucket

See. It loses much of the impact once it’s all wrapped up. The wrapper comes off in a week, so we can hope that it will still be blog worthy. It may be too much to expect it to still be oozing, but some scabs and sores would be nice.

Fingers crossed.

Winner of "Caption This" Contest Announced; Blogging World Stunned

And the winner of yesterday’s “Caption This” is:

In the words of the late Phil Rizzuto

Photobucket

Holy Cow

The contest was so close. Normally, 3 members of the staff get together and choose the winner. But it was so close, I added a 4th staff member. Still too close. So, I added a 5th. And finally, a 6th.

No clear winner could be established. So, I used a weighted system for each place.

This method finally produced a winner.

Whew!

The winner, in the closest possible contest I ever imagined is Mike, from Live life 365.

The first runner up, is Shadow Crystal, and in a 6 way tie for 3rd place, each with multiple points a piece, are Bradley, Dani, Kate, Rubba, BchBear, Mommajean, and Jenn.

Would you believe that nearly every caption garnered at least one vote? This proves unequivocally that this blog has the smartest and most creative readers.

I’m not just sucking up, I truly believe that. I appreciate all of youse.

And the prize, of course, is that Mike and his blog gets listed as the winner for a week. He also gets the coveted Zucchini award, with extra zucchini.

Photobucket

As usual, runner up Shadow Crystal also gets a Zucchini Award, and all the third place winners, due to a bumper crop of zucchini, each may have one to do with as they wish.

I understand Jenn has a wonderful recipe for zucchini parmesan, and Kate has a recipe blog, so I’m sure she has many ideas.

Thanks to everyone for making this the best “Caption This” contest yet.

I’d like to thank staff members Donna, the other Donna, Dawn, Nicole, Fran, and Tammy from Crotchety Old Man World-Wide International Headquarters and Discount House of Worship for their help in deciding the contest this week.

Growing Up Dorky

Warning: Adultish content ahead

I haven’t always been the bon vivant and manly man of the world that I am today. At one time, believe it or not, I was a dork.

Oh yeah, I know you are finding that hard to believe, with me being a star high school athlete and everything. You never knew I was an athlete, did you?

Varsity chess, baby. My senior year, I even played second board most tournaments and occasionally first board. For those of you not familiar with chess team play, that is like being the star running back of the football team, or the third batter on the baseball team. And on sports awards night, I was given a varsity letter.

That’s why I got all the babes. Nothing turns on a cheerleader more than seeing a felt castle looking thing on your high school jacket.

Photobucket
Sorry to get the ladies so worked up

I’m the George Washington of bloggers. I know I write a lot of improbable things here, but, the overwhelming majority of it is 100% sorta true. I may exaggerate a bit for comedic effect at times, but my life is messed up enough that it isn’t necessary that often.

For instance, I never really got that many babes. I know that’s hard to believe with me being so darned studly today.

I always considered myself to be Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius, but I was more like
Photobucket
“Loopy Doopy Doopah Doopah do“

Yeah. I hate to admit it, but a lot used to get by me.

Like one time, I was in the grocery store, and my friend introduced me to his co-worker. Let’s call her Sally, mainly because I have no idea what her name was. He then went off to stock potato chips, or whatever he was doing before I stopped by.

So, it was just me and Sally in aisle 8. After cracking a joke or two--I was smooth--she put her hand down my pants. I stopped her, it was the middle of the grocery store with shoppers all around, after all. So anyway, later I was telling my friend about it. He thought it meant she liked me, and would be interested in going out or something.

I told him, and I swear I’m not making this up, “No, she was just a friendly girl.”

I never asked her out because I was a dork and I thought she would turn me down.

Believe it or don’t, but this has actually happened a couple times in my life. No, not the hands down the pants thing, but women giving me signals that I missed. That’s why I feel so badly for women and have helped them try to understand the male mind.

I only wish someone would try to help me understand the female mind.

By the way, I was a guest blogger on a sports blog yesterday. You can read here about my hatred of the Red Sox.

So, Joe

What is your profession, so we know what kind of job you are out of now?

My friend Bill asked me this a few years ago, and I was kind of stumped. My employment history is kind of, ummm, checkered, to say the least.

I haven’t just had a lot of different jobs, I’ve had a crap load of different careers. Fortunately, when filling out a resume or job application, they only ask to go back a couple jobs.
Here’s mine, so we can figure out exactly what kind of work I’m out of now.

When I was a kid, I had a paper route. That isn’t a job with a career track, so I eventually moved on and gave it up, coincidentally to a kid named Joe.

When I was in high school, I worked winters part-time on a truck. I delivered kerosene, I did the grunt work, and someone else did the driving.

Then I went to college for about 15 minutes, and hated every second of it. I dropped out, and entered the exciting world of fast food in lower management.

That didn’t work out well, so I became a truck driver. Back to delivering kerosene and home heating fuel oil.
Because it’s pretty seasonal, I learned the art of cleaning and repairing boilers. It was a family business, and if you ever worked for family, you can imagine how that went.

So, it was on to in house collections for a Fortune 500 company. I won’t reveal what company it was, but they own a mighty fine blimp. The job was terrible, and I quit. I went to unemployment, and told them my tale. Normally, if one quits without cause, they will either not pay or will penalize the person and withhold payments. Before I quit, I made copies of documents that proved they were bastages. The company didn’t appreciate that, so I was summoned to court. Bottom line, judge told me to be sure no one should see the papers, and told the company to shut up. All in legalese, of course.

I worked in a warehouse loading trucks for one day. I don't do physical for minimum wage.

I worked in a pizzaria for a while. That was ok, but the owner kept getting arrested, so I decided it was time to move on.
I started my own business. I was in the auto parts business, and did well. But there was a paradigm shift in the industry, and what I did became more or less obsolete.

Then I went to a social services agency. It was great. I was happy. The pay was decent, the hours were perfect.
So, the company restructured, and my supervisor didn’t have the documentation to maintain her position, so she bid on mine.

I wound up working in a gas station for my buddy, Joe, for a few months. How long could I keep explaining to lost drivers that to get on the other side of the road, just go a few hundred feet up the road to the U turn. And how many times a day could I say “No, I’m not going to draw you a map for that, dumbass.”

At the same time, I was back to delivering newspapers in the early morning. I was late with the papers on Christmas morning, and some jerks called and complained. Rather than start throwing rocks at houses, I quit that job.

I have anger issues

I then started another business, a pizzaria. Things were going great, until the city it was in had riots. The riots ended due to the worst heat wave in our state’s history. Yeah, I know, only you, Joe.

So, I started working in an auto parts store. Didn’t know the manager was crazy. One day, he set fire to my desk, so I left.

On to another social services agency, doing asleep overnights. What a perfect job. I was paid to sleep. Sweet. This left me with plenty of day hours with nothing to do.

So, I started to work for the cable company, too. Inside sales/customer service. I’m really uncomfortable lying all day long, so eventually, I was asked to leave. My supervisor talked them out of escorting me out using police.
Why do I get a reputation as being slightly unstable?

I stayed at the asleep overnight job until they decided I had to stay awake, just in case anyone woke up and needed anything.

Photobucket

I worked in a grocery store for a week. I left and they kept calling asking me to come back. I told them I could have people make me feel bad about myself for higher pay somewhere else.

I went back to school and got my teaching degree.

I stayed at the same agency from the overnight and worked in a day program. Supposed to have 4 workers, and 20 clients. Most days had 2 workers and nearly 30 clients.

I then became a substitute teacher in a couple districts, and started working in a tutoring center.
I got a job in a private school. That lasted a month. The Principal said things were just so confusing, she had to make changes. Not that the confusion was her fault. Most schools drastically change their schedules every other day for the first 3 weeks, don’t they? By the way, Sister Joan, the Principal, was transferred a few weeks after letting me go. Gee, maybe it wasn’t me after all. How bad do you have to be to get fired when you’re a nun?

Next, I worked in a mid-level position in a social services agency. The pay was ok, but the job was terrible. Actually the job was mind numbingly dull, and the supervisor was referred to by me as the Incubus, and her supervisor was the Succubus. Every week or so, the Incubus filed termination papers for me, and I had to go in to HR and prove that the supervisor was lying.

That was fun.

Eventually, while I was on sick leave, half my department was eliminated. You just know I was in the half that got eliminated.

I was then only working at the tutoring center. I called out sick January, 2007, so I‘m not sure if I still work there or not.

So, what job am I out of right now?

Anyone with the patience to read all this deserves something. Leave a comment to answer my question, and I'll put your name in a drawing for some entrecard credits. Or I'll help you with your resume. I'm good at them.

Sunday Morning Blues

I've been working so hard for youse this week. I even wrote a couple of posts that required me to write them in advance and pay attention to grammar and spelling.

You may have noticed posting quality was up a full 14% this week. Usually I just bang them out during Colbert, and post around midnight, but no, I worked on them. You received a full week's worth of carefully crafted, properly structured blog posts. You could have used them for a class in diagramming sentences, they were that well done.
Any typos were put there to test my readers. You all passed admirably. Well done, faithful readers.

I just wanted to catch you up on a couple things.

I promise not to be a long drawn out awards ceremony.

I recently received the Amyoops Award again

Photobucket

The award was started by Amy of http://www.amyoops.com/

This time the award came from The Lost News http://www.thelostnews.com/

This is a very well done blog, and very different from most comedy blogs. It's easier to ask you to check it out rather than try to explain it.

I also received it from my buddy Tommy of email rubbish at http://emailrubbish.blogspot.com/

This is a fairly new blog and Tommy posts some of the junk email that he gets. It is extremely funny stuff, but it is for over age 18.

You know there is a bunch of rules, but I'm going to break them.

I really appreciate the awards. Unfortunately, with these awards I'm required to pick 5 for each, and I have 2, so that's 10--oy. I usually dump them on present them to Jenn, but she has already mentioned that she would beat me senseless gently decline as she has received so many her mantle is overloaded and she spends most of her Saturdays dusting them. So, the problem becomes passing them on. Because I have, more or less, become a part of the humor blogger community, and we all try to support one another, we wind up just passing the awards to each other, and the awards seem to suffer from inbreeding.
Through awards, we are all nearly related to ourselves.

So, rather than pick any one, or five, or ten, I'm just going to list some great humor bloggers, and realize that any and all are deserving of an award.

Better still, here's a link to a new site that is almost ready to launch. http://humorbloggers.com

It's loaded with the best of the best. My buddy Chelle from Offended Blogger is the blog mistress in charge.

I'm a part of the group because I cried, bribed, blackmailed asked Chelle and she has a good heart. You will probably notice many of these blogs are already on my blogroll, because my buddies are the best.

Sometimes, I feel like

It's Official! We Love Drowsey Monkey!

The staff at Crotchety Old Man World-Wide International Headquarters and Discount House of Worship met recently to discuss the annual process of selecting our favorite Canadian. Mike Myers and Jim Carrey were the first names that came to mind. Vincent D’Onofrio was bandied about, but it turns out that he is from Brooklyn, NY, and is only lusted after by Canadians.

Finally, a senior staff member tossed out the name Drowsey Monkey. After assuring the rest of the staff that Drowsey Monkey is neither an act in the Kama Sutra, nor an adult cocktail, it was decided to look more closely.

We launched a full scale investigation, including credit checks, employment history, and snacking history.

We couldn’t find any of that stuff, but what we did find is the following information:

1. The name Drowsey Monkey is derived from a favorite doll from her childhood, partnered with a monkey that belonged to her sister.

We can only be grateful their favorite toys weren’t Fuzzy Wuzzy and Super balls.

2. She has an unnatural affinity for widgets.

3. She seems to be somewhat obsessed with imfommercials and penguins. If Freud weren’t already dead, this would have surely killed him.

4. She has a car with various quirks (hmm, ever notice some similarities with people and their cars?) named Ruby.

And finally,

5. She is one of the funniest and friendliest ladies in the blogosphere.

For these reasons, we are pleased to announce Drowsey Monkey as our Canadian of the year, and coincidentally to wish her a happy one year blogiversary.

A special note from Vince just for Drowsey

More Answers To Ladies Questions

Answering Questons From the Ladies Part 2

Because the ladies are so darned inquisitive, I will answer even more of their questions.

In case anyone missed part 1

http://crotchety-old-man-yells-at-cars.blogspot.com/2008/07/taking-questions-from-ladies.html

Let me get right into it.

Jenn queries: Why is it when walking past a guy, often he will start whistling a tune? Not a cat call, just start music making.

I can’t believe women don’t know the answer to this. It’s almost too easy.

Photobucket

That’s right. Mick Jagger. The man has dated, married, and had several children with models and supermodels. Women describe him as soulful, sexy, and who knows what else they imagine. I posted a glamour shot from years ago. We all know that today he looks even more like a troll doll. If he were a dock worker from Port Newark, even a good hearted hooker would charge him double. And don’t make me post pictures of Rod Stewart and Keith Richards.
Musicians get the babes, and Jenn, you are experiencing men who understand that.

Lauren wants to know why men would kiss women they apparently have no further interest in.

Women are cunning creatures. They plan and study, and think ahead. I’ve witnessed junior high school young ladies doodling. It will be a heart with the name of her current beau running through it. She will practice writing her name as Mrs. Guy Whistlebritches. Meanwhile, Guy is busy doodling tanks, airplanes, and weird animals. Men pretty much are simple, reactive beings. We don’t put that much thought into anything we do concerning amore.

Anok needs to know why men stash food in the unlikeliest of places.

Of course men need to hide it an unlikely place. Would my stash of chocolate be safe from the Crotchety Old Lady if I left it in the cabinet instead of…wait a minute. Was this a trick to get me to reveal where my chocolate is?

Photobucket

No, it’s not in my sock drawer.

Next question comes from faithful reader Sandy

Concerning Richard Simmons, Donald Trump, and Gene Simmons, what is up with their hair? Do they think their ‘do looks good?

Sandy, men have a very tenuous relationship with their hair.

When I was young, I had a full, lustrous head of hair

Photobucket

Today

Photobucket

not so much.

That is why we do everything we can just to pile it up. Style isn’t as important as its existence. We don’t care how it looks. We are just happy it’s still there.

Sandy also asks (she had a lot of good questions) why don’t more men get pedicures.

Sandy, lots of men get pedicures, but most of them already have boyfriends.

Anok (I’m starting to know her husband well) would like to know why men are such babies when they are sick.

This is a myth. Women need to know that because men are the bigger and stronger of the species, they get much more powerful illnesses.
Your little cold is nothing. The germs that affect a man have been scientifically proven to be twice the size and strength as the tiny germs that infect women.
I’ll prove it. Women generally get sick first. The germs develop and get stronger in your system. When you pass your used germs along to your man, they are now larger, and fiercer than ever.

Pamela wants to know if men are attracted to outgoing smart women, or quiet, not so smart ones?

Photobucket

What was the question again?

Oh yeah, ummm.

Moving on.

Lucy VP asks:
Why do men expect applause after such basic tasks like washing up?

We expect it because we deserve it. Few things make men happier than getting dirty, greasy, and smelly.

Photobucket

Look how happy Mike from Dirty Jobs is

Guys would spend all their lives without taking a Photobucket if it weren’t for women.

So, yes, when we do something like acting civilized, we do expect accolades.

I’m sure these responses have answered all your man questions.

You’re welcome. I’m glad to be so helpful.
